Isaac Gertman is designer, writer, educator, and typography enthusiast. He has experience in the strategic planning, design, and production of editorial and brand identity systems, websites, publications, printed ephemera, motion graphics, wayfinding systems, and exhibitions. He was previously Design Director of Terreform, an urban research and advocacy center that investigates the forms, policies, technologies, and practices that will yield equitable, sustainable, and beautiful cities for our urbanizing planet.He was Chair of the Graphic Design Department of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and currently teaches advanced courses in Graphic Design, Typography, Branding, and Publication Design. In 2014, he won the prestigious MICA Trustees Fellowship Award for Excellence in Teaching. He previously taught at Parsons, the New School for Design; City College of New York, in the Graduate Department of Landscape Architecture; and Rhode Island School of Design. He has been a fellow of Design Trust for Public Space (2021) and Center for Urban Pedagogy (2014).His work has been recognized by Advertising Age, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Center for Architecture, Society of Publication Designers, the American Society of Landscape Architects, and has been featured in numerous books and blogs. His writing has appeared in Print magazine, Step magazine, DesignBureau, and the design blog SpeakUp. For the last two parades, I have contributed to the design and production of&nbsp; a refreshed visual system that captures the whimsy, scale, and nostalgia of the event. The identity combines custom typography, playful iconography, and a vibrant color palette inspired by vintage parade ephemera and contemporary entertainment design. Applications range from street-level signage and grandstand dressing to broadcast graphics, promotional materials, and social content—creating a cohesive, joyful presence across every touchpoint. The result is a modern identity that celebrates the parade’s legacy while setting the stage for its future. Each year, the creative team develops a bold, flexible design system that translated across print, digital, broadcast, and environmental applications. The identity features dynamic typography, a red-white-and-blue palette with modern flair, and motion-ready assets that elevated the event’s national TV presence on NBC &amp; Peacock. From on-air lower thirds to stage graphics and social media assets, the package delivers a unified look that is both celebratory and unmistakably Macy’s. Hearst, Information Architecture Consultant James George, Analytics Consultant New York City’s digital presence spans hundreds of websites, services, and applications. Despite their shared public mission, these platforms lacked a unified brand system, resulting in inconsistent experiences that dilute the city’s voice and create confusion for users. &nbsp;As Brand Design Director, I worked to unify the identities of NYC’s digital ecosystem. In close collaboration with the NYC Digital Service, I developed a brand framework aimed at improving usability, accessibility, and public trust in city services—all while respecting the autonomy of each agency. The result is a strategic and adaptable design system that helps agencies communicate more clearly and cohesively with the public. It empowers teams to deliver services that not only function well—but feel connected, credible, and human. This work lays the foundation for a more unified NYC digital presence, ensuring that the design of public services reflects the needs, values, and diversity of the people they serve. Design Principles The following principles were used to evaluate and align design and implementation decisions. EASY FOR EVERYONEDesign and test with real New Yorkers across our diverse city to continually improve content and interactions. Guide New Yorkers to achieve their objectives in their context, no matter their ability, experience, or resources. Keep communication simple, timely and relevant. TRUSTWORTHYEnable New Yorkers to reliably get what they need from city government. Understand expectations and meet or exceed them. Present information in a truthful manner. Avoid using AI-generated content or content that changes the original context. FUTURE FORWARD Build flexibility into design and technology to meet New Yorkers’ changing needs. Design for continuity not uniformity by starting with shared values and solutions. Embrace data and evidence to proactively support New Yorker needs. Logo Lockup New York City’s most recognizable brand asset is its logo, originally designed in 2007 for NYC &amp; Company, under Mayor Michael Bloomberg. This logo was created to improve user experience by bringing consistency to the way the City government presents itself to the public. However, the original identity did not sufficiently define standards for contemporary website performance, and many variations of this logo currently appear throughout the city’s digital ecosystem. This work builds on the original identity, but only to address the specifics of how it should perform across the NYC digital ecosystem today.This project defines a series of configurations to represent various programs, departments, initiatives and partnerships of our city government. These examples illustrate how the agency name complements the NYC block logo.NYC Law 30 mandates that all City communications be available in 10 of the most spoken languages based on census data: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Haitian, Korean, Arabic, Urdu, French, and Polish. Developed in collaboration with academic partners at Columbia University, CUNY, and FIT, the brand needed to reflect the city's ambitious investment in a circular economy and cutting-edge materials research. The visuals merge urbanity and biology with forward-thinking aesthetics—a flexible graphic language and custom typography used across reports, digital platforms, signage, and other public-facing materials. This identity not only unified diverse stakeholders, but also helped establish Gotham Foundry as a recognizable and authoritative presence in the city’s growing green economy. My long-standing relationship with the Orchestra (the publications, development, and membership departments, among others), has created a deep understanding of the organization, its audiences, and its goals. Kudos, Ashley Wu Publication DesignEditorial Strategy Upwardly Global is a non-profit organization that helps immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking professionals rebuild their careers in the United States. Its mission is to eliminate employment barriers for skilled immigrants and refugees, and integrate this population into the professional U.S. workforce. This year’s report documented Upwardly Global’s achievements, including rapid response to incoming Afghani refugees.
